Expired Passport Form DS-82- The form used to renew a passport
If you need to renew your expired passport, you will need to do so using form DS-82. Form DS-82 can be used to process your application for passport renewal by mail if a number of requirements are true. If your current passport is undamaged, for example, you can submit it along with your application in the mail.
You also need to have a passport that was both issued within the last fifteen years and issued after the age of sixteen and a passport that was issued with either your current name or that you can submit alongside a document showing the name that you’ve legally changed your name to. If any of those requirements are not met, you will need to fill out form DS-82 and submit your application for passport renewal in person.
If you want to begin the process of renewing your expired passport by mail, you can do so by first downloading, printing out and filling out form DS-82 from the Department of State’s official website. Once completed, you will also need to submit your expired passport book (or card, depending on the specifics of your situation), pay the appropriate fee, provide one new passport photo and mail the application to the address listed on the form.
In order for a passport photo to be considered valid, it must meet size requirements of two by two inches, must reflect your current appearance and must show a full frontal view of your face. No side view photos will be accepted. Passport photos can be taken at any United States Post Office, as well as many pharmacies that may be located in your area.
When you mail in all of the aforementioned materials along with your passport renewal form, it is recommended that you use an envelope that is large enough to contain all documents without needing to bend them. Though the documents will fit inside a traditional mail envelope, you will need to fold them in order to do so which could delay the processing go f your application significantly. It is also recommended that you pay extra money for a trackable method of delivery so that you always know where your passport renewal form is in transit.
When filling out for DS-82, it is also possible to request a larger passport book. To do so, all you need to do is print the term “52 page” at the top of your passport application before filling it out and sending it in. The renewed passport book that you receive in the mail will contain 52 pages, which is ideal for frequent travelers. These additional pages will be provided at no cost to you beyond the application fee.
How to Renew an Expired Passport
In order to travel from one country to another, it is important to possess a passport. Whether you are traveling on business or a leisure trip, without a valid passport, it is impossible to leave your native country and enter another country. In the United States, a passport is valid only for ten years, after which the holder of the passport is required to renew the same. If you want to renew your passport, then it is very easy to do so by mail. But in case the document is damaged in any form, then you will need to renew it in person.
You need to first assess whether your passport is undamaged. Next, it is important that on the date of issuance of passport, you were at least 16 years of age, and that the passport was issued in the last fifteen years. If you meet these criteria, then you can apply to renew the passport by mail. In order to renew it online, you need access to the internet. You need the DS-82 form which is available at the government travel website. If you do not have access to the internet, then contact the local passport agency, or acceptance facility to avail of the form. Once you have filled out the form, sign it and fill in the date. You will need to use black ink to fill out the form.
Next take the form, and along with your passport, and two passport size photos, put it in a padded envelope. You will need to staple one of the photos to the DS-82 form using pins on all four corners. If you need to change your name on the passport, then you will also need to attach a copy of the legal document stating your changed name. Many people often have queries regarding the expenses involved in getting a passport made. For renewal, you will need to make out a check for USD 75 to the Department of State. It is important that you include details like your name and date of birth on the front of the check. If you need to renew the passport card as well, then you will need to enclose a check for USD 95. Do a double check to know the correct amount. Once you have put in all the required documents in the envelope, seal it and mail the same to the Passport Processing Center office, details for which you can get off the net.
If you want to renew the passport in person, then you need to take a print of the DS-11 form that is available on the government website, Fill up all the details, but do not sign the form or put a date on the form. Next you need to know which documents you need for renewal. For renewal, you need evidence of your citizenship, proof of identification, two passport size photographs. Of course, since, in this case, you have your old passport, you can use that as a proof of citizenship and identification. If you have lost the passport, then you will need documents to substantiate both accounts.
You will need to give photocopies of all your identification documents and when you go to renew your passport, you need to have both the original documents and the duplicates with you. Once you have in your possession all the documents that are needed to renew a passport, take them to the passport agency in your region. You will need to sign the form in front of the agent at the passport agency.
Should I renew my expired passport or apply for a new one?
(Fairfax, VA, USA)
Question: My name is Katie. My passport was issued more than 11 years ago. My passport expired February of last year.
So my passport was issued less than 15 years ago. I was 17. But it has expired.
Also, I’m married, so my name has changed. I have all the documents needed to present/prove my name change.
My passport has slight water damage — i.e. the cover is coming off, but neither my photo nor information has been damaged. I read your page on ‘damaged’ passports, and would just go in-person to see what the post office says, however, I cannot find the form for ‘renewing in-person and NOT by mail’. Which leads to this:
What should I do? (Please help me) AND if I should just ‘renew’ where is the form «for not renewing via mail but renewing in-person via post office.» If I need to just apply for a ‘new one’ that is fine, too. Just break it to me nicely 🙂
Thank you for your time and effort, hope to hear from you soon.
Answer: There is no process by which you can renew a passport in person. Either you renew a passport by mail or you apply for a new passport in person.
The State Department regulation states, «If your passport has been significantly damaged, especially the book cover or the page displaying your personal data and photo, you will need to apply for a new passport.»
If you try to renew your passport using Form DS-82 and the agent processing your application deems the passport significantly damaged, you will be asked to apply again using Form DS-11. It will be a loss of both time and money.
In order to avoid this risk, you should appear at an application acceptance facility and apply for a new passport. Click the links below for more information.

How to Renew an Expired Passport in Los Angeles

Renewing a passport in Los Angeles, California is generally a simple procedure. As long as you still have your expired passport and it’s in decent shape, was issued when you were at least 16 and within the past 15 years, and has your current name (or you can document your name change with an original or certified copy of your marriage certificate, divorce decree, or court order), you can renew by mail. If these don’t all apply, though, you must renew in person at a local passport acceptance facility; in many circumstances when you don’t satisfy these criteria, you also have to go through the entire first-time application process.
Fill out form DS-82, available for download from the Department of State website, to renew your expired passport. Note that the application has two pages, and your signature and date are required at the end of Page 1.
Staple a passport photo to your application using four vertical staples in the corners. An acceptable passport photo:
- Is in color with a white or off-white background
- Was taken within the past six months
- Shows your face straight on with a neutral expression or a natural smile
- Shows you in regular clothing and without any accessories
- Is 2 by 2 inches, with your head between 1 and 1 3/8 inches
- Is printed on matte or glossy photo-quality paper
Include a check or money order for your renewal fee, payable to U.S. Department of State. Check the Department of State website page on passport fees for the exact current amount. Include your full name and date of birth on the front of the check or money order. Don’t send cash.
Residents of Los Angeles who are eligible to renew by mail should send their entire application package to the National Passport Processing Center at P.O. Box 640155, Irving, TX 75064-0155.
To apply in person, visit the U.S. State Department website’s Passport Acceptance Facility Search Page. Enter your Los Angeles ZIP code or Los Angeles and California into the appropriate fields and click “Search” to find the most convenient passport agency. Post offices, libraries and government offices are among entities that receive authorization to process passport applications. Alternatively, call your local branch of any of these institutions to ask if they offer this service; if not, a representative should be able to tell you where to go.
Expect a four- to six-week wait for receiving a renewed U.S. passport.
