How to send GIFs in WhatsApp on Android and iOS

The wait for GIFs within WhatsApp was long, but in early 2017 the company finally started allowing users to send moving images to each other quickly and easily – but the feature is a bit hidden.

To be able to send them, you’ll need to be running a recent version of the WhatsApp software and if you read down below we’ll show you exactly how to do it.

It’s different for iOS and Android though, so be sure you’re reading the right section before you begin to test it out.

How to send GIFs in WhatsApp on Android

To send GIFs on Android you’ll have to really dig deep, as it’s not at all obvious how to do it. It’s hidden behind a small button in a sub menu, so first off you’ll want to press on the emoticon face in the bottom left corner of the screen.

Here you’ll be greeted with the yellow emoji that you can send within WhatsApp, but in the center of the bottom of the screen there’s a small button that reads GIF.

Press on that, and you’ll see a selection of GIFs pulled directly from the service Tenor GIFs.

The most popular GIFs will appear at the top and then you can scroll down to see more options. If you want something specific, press the magnifying glass in the bottom left and enter your search.

Once your search has been entered, you can then scroll to the right to see all of the options that match your search.

Then just tap on the GIF you’re interested in to view a full screen preview. From here you can add a message if you want, and tap the arrow to send it.

How to send GIFs in WhatsApp on iOS

It’s not easy to find GIFs in WhatsApp on iOS either. You’ll need to press the plus icon in the bottom left of the screen to open up multimedia options, then you’ll be greeted with an option that reads ‘photo and video library’, which you should press.

In the bottom left again you’ll see a magnifying glass icon with the word GIF next to it. Press here and you’ll be able to search for whatever GIFs you want to send.

Then just tap on the GIF you wish the send, and you’ll be able to push that out to your chat.

There’s also a starred GIF option that will allow you to save your favorite GIFs or those you use regularly, so you won’t always need to re-search for them each time you want to use them.

What if you have a different keyboard?

Some virtual keyboards offer an alternative way of sending GIFs alongside the method shown above.

For example, if you’re using SwiftKey you can find GIFs within the keyboard when you hold down the enter button in the lower right hand corner.

You won’t be able to search for GIFs if you use this method, but it does give you options such as ‘Angry’, ‘Bored’ and ‘Happy’ so you can quickly find a GIF to show the emotion you want to send.

How to send WhatsApp GIFs on Android and iOS

Compared to other messaging apps, WhatsApp was slow to allow its one billion customers to send GIFs to each other.

In November 2016, the Facebook-owned company allowed everyone on iOS to send and search for the internet’s favourite file format – this inclusion was after the addition of GIFs for Android users.

Just days later, the app added the function to search as well as send them on iOS. To do so, you need to be running at least version 2.16.16 of the iOS app. Before the search function was added version 2.16.15 of the messaging app included the ability to send and receive animated GIFs, turn your videos into GIFs (as long as the clip was six seconds or shorter) and send Live Photos as animated GIFs.

Now WhatsApp is improving the GIF offering by letting its users search through and send GIFs from Giphy on Android.

How to search for GIFs on Android

Leveraging the power of Giphy, Android users are able to send a huge variety of moving images. The v2.17.6 beta of the Android app lets those running the operating system search and send GIFs from the website’s archives. It should be noted that the feature is in beta and it is unclear when it will roll out more widely. As a result, some users may not yet be able to see the tool.

According to The Next Web if you press the emoji button next to the text inpyt area on Android and flick to the GIF section the search will be available.

How to send GIFs on WhatsApp

To search for, and then send, a GIF, click the ‘+’ button, select Photo & Video Library and your camera roll should appear. As part of the latest update, a small magnifying glass is now shown in the bottom left-hand corner with the word ‘GIF.’ Select this and rows of GIFs will appear. You can either browse, or search for a particular animation.

Alternatively you can save GIFs to your handset, although saving directly from the Giphy website, for example, defaults to saving the GIF as a static image.

If you install the Giphy app you can also search for the GIF you want by reaction (Happy), person or character (Alan Partridge) or show (Seinfeld). Or you can browse popular GIFs and topics.

Select the GIF you want to send and below it you’ll see a row of icons including SMS, email, Messenger, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest. Press the three dots at the end of this row of icons to see the link and share icons.

Click Share, select WhatsApp, choose your recipient and press send.

How to turn a video into a GIF on WhatsApp

Open the WhatsApp chat you want to use to send the GIF.

Click the ‘+’ sign in the bottom left-hand corner and go to Photo & Video Library and select a video.

Trim the clip to the length you want, annotate, doodle or crop the video using the tools in the top right-hand corner and then toggle the blue icon to GIF. This will generate your GIF and you can send it in the traditional way.

If you’be set it so that shared photos and videos on WhatsApp are saved to your camera roll, any GIF you create and share will be stored. Alternatively you can press and hold a shared GIF to save it to your phone. You can also forward shared GIFs to other WhatsApp contacts from this menu.

Facebook added GIF support in May last year, with Twitter following suit in February.

How to Send Animated GIF on WhatsApp

In this article, we’ll try to list down all the different ways you can send GIFs via WhatsApp on iOS and Android, provided you have a supported version (version 2.16.15 or above on iOS, and version 2.16.310 or above on Android) installed.

Send Animated GIFs via WhatsApp on iOS

There are various ways in which you can share GIFs on WhatsApp.

Create GIFs from short videos or Live Photos

You can create your own GIFs and share them among your contacts or groups in WhatsApp. The following steps will guide you to do so:

  1. Open the specific chat (contact or group) where you want to share the GIF.
2. Tap on the “+” icon to open sharing options.
  3. Record a video using the “Camera” option, or pick one of the videos from Camera Roll using “Photo & Video Library option”. You’ll be taken to the video editor screen.
  4. Trim the video using the slider, such that the video duration is 6 seconds or less. A GIF/Video toggle will appear on the top-right corner.
  5. Choose GIF and tap on the Send button. Your short video clip will be shared as a GIF.

iPhone 6S also introduced a feature called Live Photos where you can capture a photo along with a short video covering a few seconds before and after the shot. If you want to share Live Photos from Camera Roll via WhatsApp, you need to have 3D Touch enabled on your iPhone. Follow the steps below to share Live Photos as GIF on WhatsApp.

  1. Open the specific chat (contact or group) where you want to share the GIF.
2. Tap on the “+” icon to open sharing options.
  3. Select Photo & Video Library and 3D Touch a Live Photo.
  4. Select the ‘Select as GIF’ option from the 3D Touch menu.
  5. The Live Photo will be shared as GIF in the particular WhatsApp chat.
Share existing GIFs from Camera Roll

WhatsApp for iOS (version 2.16.16) doesn’t directly allow you to share animated GIFs from your Camera Roll. From WhatsApp, when you try to share a GIF image from your Photos library (by tapping the “+” icon in the chat and choosing “Photo & Video Library”), you get a notification saying, “This photo cannot be used. Please choose another photo”. But the same is possible when you share a GIF from another app using the Share Menu, even from the native Photos app.

Follow the steps below to share GIFs from Camera Roll via WhatsApp.

  1. Open the Photos app and tap on the existing GIF file in Camera Roll to open it. Even though it shows as a still photo, the GIF properties are intact in the file.
  2. Tap on the Share icon and select WhatsApp from the Share Menu.
  3. Select the chat (contact or group) that you want to share the GIF with, and tap on Send.

The GIF will be shared in the selected chat.

Share GIF from online sources

WhatsApp lets you share GIFs from online sources, and even includes a GIF search feature which lets you search GIFs from Giphy and other services. You can also share GIFs anywhere on the Internet via Safari.

The below steps will guide you to share GIFs on WhatsApp from online sources.

  1. Open the specific chat (contact or group) where you want to share the GIF.
2. Tap on the “+” icon to open sharing options.
  3. Tap on “Photo & Video Library” and choose the Search GIF option in the bottom left corner of the screen.
  4. Search and select a GIF you want to share and tap on the Send button.

The GIF will be shared in the particular chat.

If you have the Internet URL of a particular GIF you want to share on WhatsApp, follow the steps below:

  1. Open the URL in Safari and tap on the Share icon.
  2. Choose WhatsApp from the Share Menu and select the contact or group you want to share the particular GIF with.
  3. Tap on Send button.

The GIF will now be shared with the specific contact or group.

Another way to share GIF files either from Camera Roll or from the Internet is by opening the file in Photos App or Safari, tap and hold on the GIF, and select the Copy option. Next, you can just go to the WhatsApp chat that you intend to share the file with, and select Paste while tapping on the text input field. The GIF image will be pasted directly in the input field and tapping the Send button will upload the GIF in the particular chat.

Similarly, you can directly share GIFs in WhatsApp chats using third party GIF Keyboards available on the App Store.

Send Animated GIFs via WhatsApp on Android

With the latest version of WhatsApp rolling out in different parts of the world, it’s relatively easy to share GIFs on Android.

Create and share GIFs from videos

Like its iOS counterpart, WhatsApp for Android allows you to create GIFs out of videos less than 6 seconds of duration. The following steps will help you to create and share GIFs on WhatsApp for Android.

  1. Open the specific chat (contact or group) where you want to share the GIF.
  2. Tap on the Camera icon next to the text input field and press and hold the Shooter to record video. Alternatively, you can choose an existing video by tapping on Attachments >> Gallery >> Videos tab.
  3. After the video has been recorded or selected, you will be taken to the editor screen, where you can trim the video.
  4. As long as your video is less than 6 seconds, you should be able to see a small Camcorder icon on the top-right corner of the screen (which signifies Video mode). Tap on the icon to change the mode to GIF.
  5. Now tap on the Send button. Your video will be shared as a GIF in the particular WhatsApp chat.
Share existing GIFs from Gallery

If you have a GIF already saved to your Android phone, sharing it on WhatsApp is relatively easy.

  1. Open the specific chat (contact or group) where you want to share the GIF.
  2. Tap on Attachments >> Gallery >> GIF tab. Here, you can find all your locally stored GIF files.
  3. Select a particular GIF and hit the Send button.

How to send gifs images on WhatsApp: The definitive guide

Did you know that you can send GIFs on WhatsApp? In this guide I’ll tell you how to use this function which allows you to share animated images with your contacts on iPhone and Android devices.

For those who have some doubts… GIFs, which stand for Graphics Interchange Format, are nothing but graphic images without sound that move in a loop, creating a particular fun effect. There are different ways to share WhatsApp animated gifs:

  • Send a GIF that is saved on your mobile phone
  • Convert a video to a GIF
  • Share a GIF from another app

This mind-blowing feature is available only for all devices that have the latest WhatsApp version installed, both iPhone and Android (we are waiting for Windows Phone). WhatsApp rolled out this feature to catch up with rival instant messaging services such as Facebook Messenger, Snapchat and iMessage.

How to send Gifs through WhatsApp easily

Here I’ll walk you through the procedure to share animated images both on iOS and Android. It is very easy and doesn’t require technical skills.

How to share animated Gifs through WhatsApp on Android

The easiest way to send WhatsApp gifs animated on Android is to download them from the Internet. Simply Google “WhatsApp gif” or “Gif for WhatsApp” or just look for “Gifs” and you’ll get thousands of them. Once you’ve spotted one you like, save the images to the camera roll of your phone.

Then open the recipient’s chat screen on WhatsApp, select the GIF you’ve previously saved on the phone’s camera roll, and send it as you do with normal pictures.

For both Android and iPhone users, there is the chance to search for GIFs on Giphy within the WhatsApp app and send them to their friends. For those who don’t know it, Giphy is a website that collects animated images created by users around the world and lets you share them on social networks and in group chats.

To activate the GIF search function on Android, tap on the emoji button next to the text input field and then toggle between emoji and GIFs from the new bottom bar, as shown in this photo:

With this WhatsApp has added a new way to send animated images, which would add to the photos that you take with your mobile phone or to the images with quotes that you can find here on Messaginapplab.

Option 2: you can share GIFs from other applications such as Dropbox. To do so, open the Dropbox app (or the one from which you want to share a GIF), then tap on the GIF you want to send and select “Share“. Then click on “Export” and then select “WhatsApp“. WhatsApp will open automatically, and you can then pick the contact or group to send the GIF to.

Option 3: you can create the GIF directly from a video on WhatsApp as long as it’s under six seconds. This is probably the most interesting feature, because it allows you to create your own GIF from a video recorded with a mobile phone. To use this function, proceed as follows:

  • Open WhatsApp
  • Tap on the paperclip at the top and open the video gallery
  • Select the video you want to convert to a GIF
  • Edit the video with the WhatsApp editor: Reduce the duration to 6 seconds (the maximum allowed for a GIF)
  • Tap on the camera icon at the top right (so that it becomes a GIF)
  • If you want, add a caption
  • Send your GIF by clicking the arrow in the bottom right

Et voila, it’s done.

N.B. Remember, a GIF has a maximum duration of about 6-7 seconds, so if the video is longer it will be posted as a video. Once you submit your GIF to your contact or group it will play automatically. The GIF will never stop playing, so they will see it in constant motion until they close the screen.

Send GIFs through WhatsApp on iPhone

Let’s see the procedure for sharing GIFs over WhatsApp on iPhone with the iOS operating system.

Here’s how:

  • Open WhatsApp and go to the recipient’s chat screen (or group)
  • Tap on “+” in the bottom left corner and then “Photo and Video Library
  • At this point you can select a GIF saved in the camera roll and send it, or select a video and turn it into a GIF
  • If the GIF is already saved, you simply select and send it
  • If you want to convert a video to a GIF, you should select the video, open it on WhatsApp, change the
  • duration to a maximum of a few seconds and click on the GIF button that appears on the screen. Then select the contact and send it
Activate GIF search on iPhone

On iPhones you can find many beautiful animated images by using GIPHY – the best online GIF search engine. With GIPHY, you can select a GIF you like and send it directly through WhatsApp.

The following is the procedure:

  • Open the conversation or group screen
  • Click on the “+” in the lower left corner
  • Click on “GIF”

Now select the one you prefer among those that appear or enter a search term. Then you can edit the GIF and send it!

Create a GIF from a live photo

On iPhone you can also create GIFs for WhatsApp from a live picture. Simply follow the procedure described above and, instead of tapping on GIF, go to camera roll and select a live picture. The WhatsApp editor will turn it into a stunning GIF.

Finally, for those who use WhatsApp web, unfortunately it is only able to read GIFs, and at present cannot send them.

How to Send Animated GIFs in WhatsApp on iPhone and Android

Sending animated GIF images on WhatsApp is very easy. In this article we will explain creating animated GIFs from videos and saving them in your Android device and iPhones.

WhatsApp, the most popular chat messenger, is a favorite with most of us when it comes to chatting, sharing pictures and videos. It has been a while since you can send and receive GIFs in WhatsApp. You also might be frequently receiving animated GIFs forwarded by friends. But did you know that you too could send your own GIFs, convert videos to GIFs, or just convert the existing GIFs in your photo gallery to videos and animated GIFs? However, you must ensure that the videos that you want to convert to GIFs should not exceed 6 seconds in length.

In this article, I will give you the step-wise instructions on how to send GIFs in WhatsApp on iPhone and Android. I will also show how to convert videos to GIFs on both.

Sending GIFs in WhatsApp on iPhone

If you are an iPhone user, you are lucky as you can also send Live Photos as GIF images. The feature is supported on version 2.16.16 and above of the iOS.

  1. Open the WhatsApp chat to which you want to send a GIF and tap the + icon in the bottom left.
  2. Select Photo & Video Library. If the GIF you want to send exists on your phone, select it and tap the send button. If you want to send a video, in the editor, tap the blue switch (camera icon), select the video and tap the send button.

Whenever you select a GIF to send it opens in the editor. In the editor you can trim, crop, add Emojis, draw or add text to the GIF before sending.

Converting Video to GIF

You can also send any video as GIF. Follow these steps:

  1. Select the video that you want to convert to GIF before sending.
  2. In the editor, tap the GIF toggle at the top right corner and then tap the send button to send the video as an animated GIF.

Note: The Video/GIF toggle is available only when the Video duration is 6 seconds or less. If the video you want to send as GIF is longer, you can always crop the video to make it shorter.

If you want to search for a GIF on the internet, tap the GIF button at the bottom left.

WhatsApp uses the Tenor GIF keyboard as its source, so there is no dearth of choices for you to choose from the list available. Use the search bar at the top to look for GIFs that exactly match your mood and thoughts.

Sending GIFs in WhatsApp on Android

Sending GIFs on WhatsApp on Android is similar to sending it on the iPhone. Ensure that you have the latest version of WhatsApp. The only difference is that when it comes to converting a video to GIF the options are different.

  1. Open WhatsApp and select the contact to send the animated GIF image.
  2. Tap on the attachment icon at the bottom right corner. Select Gallery from the options presented.
  3. Select the existing GIF that you want to send and tap the Send
  4. If you want to send a video as animated GIF, select the video from the Gallery. This step is a bit dicey because it depends on the device. On some devices, you need to select the video and tap the Video icon to toggle to GIF, while in other devices, for example, Samsung J5, when you select the video to convert to GIF and it is 6 seconds in length or less, the Video/GIF icon is displayed as illustrated below.

Tap the GIF button to convert the video to GIF and when completed you can use the tools at the top to crop, add Emojis or text. You can also add a caption to the GIF before sending it to the recipient.

Note:  You can select a larger video too to convert to GIF, but it does not make much sense. However, if you still want to convert a larger video to GIF, the selection process is the same except that when you select a video that exceeds 6 seconds in run time, the Video/GIF toggle does not display as illustrated in the image below.  I tried the steps mentioned below to convert a 4 minutes long video to GIF on Samsung J5. It converted without any issues except that the animated GIF does not include audio, as it is in graphic format.

Converting Larger videos to GIF

  • Open the video to convert in the WhatsApp chat.
  • The video opens in the editor. Tap any section of the video timeline (highlighted in the image 1 below) and tap the picture icon at the bottom left to return to the Gallery and re-select the video. The editor now displays the Video/GIF toggle as illustrated below. Continue with the steps mentioned above to convert the video to GIF.

Searching for GIFs on Android

  1. If you want to search for a GIF image on the internet instead, tap the Emoji button on the left of the text input area.
  2. The list of Emojis is displayed, scroll down and tap the GIF button on the bottom right corner to search for GIFs. Select the GIF to send and it will open in the editor. Add text, caption etc. and send to the recipient. You can save the GIFs to your phone but it will save as static images.

Saving GIFs for Later Use

You can also save the GIFs sent and received for later use on iPhone and Android. Select the GIF received or sent in WhatsApp and tap the Star icon. The selected GIF will be available in the Starred tab when you next search for existing GIFs.

GIF is definitely not a preferred image format but due to its usefulness in creating internet memes it has become popular with most messengers. As users, we too enjoy using the end number of GIFs from Giphy on Android and iPhones, after all the GIFs make the messages interesting and sometimes really funny. I believe youngsters use more of GIFs to convey their feelings and emotions than texting the same! Is it true?
