Take note of how much each line on the dial is worth. For example, on something like a dial caliper indicator, the printed numbers on the dial will range from 0 to 100 in increments of 10. In this case, each line on the dial is worth one millimeter. To make it easier to read, the dial will often have a longer line for the 5 mark between each printed number.

Start at the first printed number behind the pointer and then count upwards. So, for example, if the first number behind the pointer is 10, then you add the lines between that number and where the pointer is to get your measurement. So if it’s pointing to the fourth line after the number 10, then the reading would be 14.

Estimate for readings between lines. If the pointer is between lines on the dial, then you will have to do a little guesswork. The best way to estimate is to gauge how close the pointer is to each line. So, for example, if the pointer is just barely below the point of hitting the fourth line between the 0 and the 10 on the dial, you might estimate and write down a measurement of 3.9.

Due to their widespread popularity, one can buy dial indicators online, or nick them from everyday hardware stores, too. Sounds like an easy device to use? Nah, for starters here is a rundown of three versatile steps to easily read a dial indicator!

1. Preparing the Dial Indicator

Start off by simply loosening the beam lock of the dial indicator and then carefully slide the indicator back and forth for a hassle-free operation. Next, close the huge flat dial indicator jaws by bringing them together completely. Before proceeding to the next step, ensure the dial gives a 0 reading.

2. Taking the measurement

Here is the moment of reckoning and you would want to exercise a little bit of caution. Measure outer surfaces by gently closing the large flat jaws of the dial gauge on the part to be measured. Cylindrical surfaces such as pipes can be measured by keeping the body of the dial gauge perpendicular to the axis of the cylinder. Failure to do the requisite action will give imprecise measurements.

Now comes the part of measuring inner apertures, where smaller pointed jaws on the back of dial indicator’s head are measured by placing these jaws into the aperture and stretching them out until they touch the inner surfaces. This technique lends you credible results for measuring the full diameter of the hole.

3. Obtaining the Measurement Reading

To derive a fine reading from a dial indicator, the modus operandi entails determining the position of the leading surface of the dial gauge head along the marked scale on its body. Normally, the lines on the body are marked, wherein each number represents a step of 1 cm. Plus, there are also 10 unnumbered lines in the middle of the numbered lines where each unnumbered line represents 0.1 cm.

All you have to do is to make use of the highest visible line on the left of the leading surface of the dial gauge head. For instance, if the highest visible line is 2 unnumbered lines above the numbered line 4, you will have to jot it down as 4.2 cm.

The name comes from the concept of indicating to the user that which their naked eye cannot discern; such as the presence, or exact quantity, of some small distance (for example, a small height difference between two flat surfaces, a slight lack of concentricity between two cylinders, or other small physical deviations).

How to Calibrate a Dial Indicator

Dial indicators help users measure the distance between two plates, but the readings given by the tool could be faulty. Any measurement tool can fall prey to a myriad of possible factors that can create false measurements. Slipped teeth or incorrect zero settings result in wildly varying and incorrect readings. Calibrating a dial indicator prior to using it is the only way to be sure that the tool is reading correctly and its measurements are accurate.

Wipe the surface plate, the gauge blocks and the tip of the dial indicator’s plunger to remove any dirt or debris. Lock the dial indicator in place on its stand, resting the indicator high enough to allow the plunger to travel its full length and still be able to touch off against the surface plate.

Rest the tip of the plunger directly on the surface plate. Rotate the indicator’s face until the «0» marking aligns with the dial.

Raise the plunger and slip a 0.020-inch gauge block underneath. Lower the plunger onto the surface of the gauge block. Check that the indicator reads 0.020-inch. Raise and lower the plunger two more times to check that the dial indicator gives the same measurement in the same spot repeatedly.

Repeat the process with 0.025-inch, 0.050-inch, 0.100-inch, 0.250-inch, 0.400-inch and 1-inch gauge blocks. Check each block three times to ensure the dial indicator’s repeatability. If the indicator’s plunger reaches a 2-inch depth, stack the blocks to check the dial indicator at 1.025-inch, 1.050-inch, 1.100-inch, 1.250-inch, 1.400-inch and 2-inch increments as well.

Reject the dial indicator if its readings are off by more than 1 increment over the first 2-1/3 revolutions of the dial. Allow the dial indicator’s readings to be off by 1 additional increment for each full rotation of the dial thereafter. Compensate mentally for the incremental offset when taking readings with the tool.

Tip

Calibrate a dial indicator daily, or whenever the tool is used if it is used less frequently. Refer to the facility’s measurement tooling procedures if using a dial indicator in the workplace.
