When making a phone call to Australia, have a good phone card or other plan so you don’t get hit with long distance fees. You’ll also need pertinent dialing information. This includes the international prefix, the country code for Australia, the city code for the city you are dialing and of course the actual telephone number. Once you have that information in front of you and have determined that you are calling at a reasonable hour, you should have no problem calling Australia.
Items you will need
Get a phone card. International calls to Australia can be very expensive. The easiest way to make cheap phone calls to Australia is to simply get a phone card with a good rate to Australia, or use a service like Skype.
Check the time difference before you make your call. Australia covers three different times zones. Depending on which part of the United States you are calling from and where in Australia you are calling to, there could be anywhere from a 12- to 20-hour time difference.
Dial the international prefix for the country you are calling from. If you are dialing from the United States, the international prefix for calling out of the U.S. is 011. However, if you are not calling from the U.S., you will need to contact the local operator to find out what the international prefix is there.
Dial the country code for Australia. The country code for Australia is 61 No matter which country you are dialing from, the country code for Australia will always remain the same.
Complete the dialing for your call to Australia. In addition to the international prefix and the country code you will also need the city code. This number will vary by city. Once you have dialed the city code, simply complete dialing the rest of the number and wait for your call to be connected.
