There are two types of metal framing components: studs and tracks. In most of the cases, the tracks are installed at the bottom and at the top of a wall, while the metal studs are placed inside their channels and secured with screws. The metal studs come in different sizes and lengths, as to fit your needs properly. In order to bend metal studs, you need to use a straight cut thin snips. Choose the metal studs and tracks with the right size for your project and buy a sharp aviation snips, to cut the studs at the needed lengths. In addition, you have to make several cuts on both flanges of the metal studs, as to ease the bending process.

Smart Tip: Wear safety gloves to avoid cutting yourself in the sharp edges of the metal studs.

 

How to bend metal studs

 

The best way to bend metal studs is to cut their flanges, every 2-3”, on both sides. Actually, if you want to create curves or archways with drywall boards, you have to bend the metal tracks and then fit the steel studs in their channels.

In order to make the cuts, we recommend you to use straight-cut thin snips. Remember that the cuts must be parallel on the flanges, otherwise you won’t be able to bend the metal track properly. Learn more about how to build a drywall arch.

After you have cut the steel studs, you have to bend them as to fit into position. Make sure you wear safety gloves, otherwise you might injure yourself in the sharp edges.

Secure the curved metal tracks to the drywall board, by using drywall screws ( use 1-1/4″ drywall screws for 1/2” drywall, as if you are installing 5/8” drywall a better option would be 6 x 1-5/8″ screws). Use 1/2” no. 8 pan-head screws to fasten the metal studs together.

If you have to attach the metal studs to the ceiling or to a wall, then you have to cut out small squares from the flange, by using thin snips. Work with patience as to get the job done as a professional, otherwise you might damage the metal studs. Next, drive in several screws through the metal studs, as to fasten it to the ceiling / walls.

In this image you can see the procedure from a different angle. If you want to secure the metal studs to a concrete ceiling / wall, you have to make several pilot holes with a drill machinery, install plastic dowels and drive in the screws.

If you have to secure the steel studs to a drywall ceiling, you should first locate the wood studs (with a stud finder) and then drive in screws every 10”. Use a spirit level to make sure you install the stud properly.

How to Bend Sheet Metal

If you don’t have a special tool for bending sheet metal (called a “sheet metal brake”), you can also do it with a vise and your bare hands, provided that the metal isn’t too thick. Below, we’ve outlined the basic materials and steps needed to bend metal for your own hobbies.

  1. Buy the Right Materials: To do the job correctly, you’ll need a vise, two form blocks (wood or metal), a calculator, protractor, tape measure, mallet, and something to write with. Depending on the metal’s thickness, you may also need a heavy-duty hammer instead of a mallet.
  1. Assess the Metal: First, use your tape measure to figure out how thick the sheet metal is, and then plug that number into this formula: (π/180) x B x (IR + K x MT).

MT is the metal thickness, K is the K-Factor (find it with this chart), IR is the inside radius, and B is the desired bend angle. With the formula completed, you’ll find the bend allowance, which is precisely how many inches the metal will expand when bent.

  1. Get Ready to Bend: Before putting the sheet metal into a vise, first mark your bend lines with a pencil, and then cut the sheet so that at least ¼” of extra room is left over. Finally, make sure the sheet is filed down smoothly, because otherwise you may get cracks in the metal.
  1. Place Forms and Sheet in Vise: Your form blocks should have the exact shape for bending your metal angle. When you clamp the sheet metal into the vise’s grip, make sure the bend lines on your blocks and sheet match up. If there is too much play in the metal and it feels wobbly when you put pressure on it, you might want to ask a friend to hold the top while you use the mallet.

Metal is bent to make various products, fixtures and machinery. In fact, industrial and factory machinery often incorporate metal bending processes as a function of manufacturing. This bending and shaping is done according to designs and specifications where the machinery doing the bending must be programmed to apply the correct bending force. Calculating and determining the correct force involves factors and considerations such as the width and thickness of the metal and the diameter of the bending machinery.

Determine the tensile strength of the metal sheet, or «T,» in units of pounds per square inch. Refer to the metal documentation or specifications. As a example, assume T is 20 pounds per square inch.

Determine the width of the metal sheet, or «W,» in inches. Refer to metal documentation or specifications. As an example, assume W is 60 inches.

Find the thickness, or «t,» of the metal sheet in units of inches. Refer to metal documentation or specifications. As an example, assume 1.5 inch thick.

Find the diameter of the die, or «D,» used to punch the metal sheet doing the bending process in units of inches. Think of a standard V-shape bend, where a metal die strikes the middle of the metal to bend it in a V-shape. Refer to the documentation associated with the machinery used to do the bending. As an example, assume is D is 2 inches.

Calculate bending force, or «F,» using the formula: F = KTWt^2/D in pounds. The variable K is 1.33 for V-shape bending. The bending force will be in units of pounds. Using the example numbers above:

F = KTWt^2/D = [(1.33)(20)(60)(1.5)(1.5)]/2 = 1,795.5 pounds
