Belkin wireless router setup – Belkin Routers: Easy Setup

A Beginner’s Guide to Setup a Belkin Wireless Router

Wireless routers and routers in general can be difficult to setup if you have no prior experience. The location, the way you setup the router and having all of your devices interact appropriately can take a bit of persistence even for the most tech savvy individual.

Follow this Belkin router setup to get up and running as soon as possible.

Install the Drivers

First things first, your router may be recognized by your operating system, or it may not be recognized. In either case, you will want to install the factory recommended drivers on your computer. Within the box that the router came in, there should be a DVD or CD available.

Place the disc into your computer and follow the installation instructions that are prompted on the screen.

If your DVD or CD Rom broke or you do not have one for some reason, you can download the drivers right online. This is done by going to the support website and finding the drivers for your respective modem. The site is not always easy to navigate, but there is a search feature that will help you with your setup.

Now, download the .exe and follow the setup instructions provided.

Hardware Setup

The router is pretty straightforward and will only come with a regular AC adapter to provide power. You will want to unpack your router and place it in the room where your PC is located. If you plan on using your router all throughout your home, you will want to pick a central room that has a cable outlet.

I would highly recommend placing the router anywhere but the attic or basement if you want to have the utmost in connectivity.

Once you have put the power on, you will need to connect the actual Internet cable to your router.

  1. Locate your cable or ADSL modem.
  2. Plug an Ethernet plug into one of the modem’s open ports.
  3. Plug the Ethernet plug into the router.

Plug Power Tip

Oftentimes, you will not receive a signal because you have not powered on the devices properly. If this occurs, you will want to disconnect the power from both the modem and your router. After waiting 30 – 60 seconds, plug back in the modem and wait for all of the lights to go on.

Once the modem and all of the correct LED lights are illuminated, plug in the router.

Gather Information

You will not be able to access the Internet without the proper password being supplied. Every Belkin router setup requires you to look at the bottom of the router for both the SSID and password that comes as a default with the router. This is the information needed to:

  • Choose the right connection needed for the next section.
  • Access the Internet with the password provided.

If you do not have this information, you will be locked out of the Internet and will need to contact Belkin.

Checking Your Connectivity

After the hardware setup, your computer should now recognize the new Internet connection. You can view all of your Internet connections using a Windows-based operating system by looking at your notification area on the bottom right of your screen and clicking either the plug or bar icon.

Now, click on your respective signal and test your Internet. If you are not able to connect, you can try unplugging all devices and trying again. A signal should be broadcasted as long as all of the lights on your modem and router are illuminated.

If you are connected but you cannot access the Internet, you may have to call your Internet provider.

Advanced Setup

You may want to provide more advancements with your router. There are a slew of features that you can access and changes you can make to further secure and customize your Internet connection.

Access the Control Page

Belkin makes it very easy to access their router’s setup page and it can be done by following the steps below:

  1. Open up your Internet browser.
  2. Within the address bar, type: 192.168.2.1 or http://router.

Connect to the Internet

Now you will be prompted with a slew of options. If you are connected to the Internet but cannot actually access the Internet, you can click on the “Let’s Connect to the Internet” button. This will attempt to get you online.

Update Firmware

Following this, you may be prompted with a firmware update. If an update is available, you must install it to ensure that you are adequately protected. Once complete, you will want to bolster your security further and choose your encryption type.

Update Your Network Name and Password

Ideally, you will choose the WPA2 option and change your network name and password accordingly. You need to have this information on-hand at all times and Belkin makes it easy. Remember the Gather Information section of this article? In the same spot, there is a place to write out your new name and password.

All that is left to do is register, located at the bottom of the page, and you will be directed to the router’s dashboard with further advanced options. For the average person, you can simply close this page and be on your way. If you want to fine-tune your experience, all of the options are self-explanatory.

Now, you have successfully completed your Belkin router setup. Connecting other devices will require your network name and password as well as a wireless network card. Tablets, laptops and game consoles will come with these cards already installed in most cases.

There is no reason to stress about setting up your Belkin wireless router to work with your Comcast Internet service. Despite differences in hardware, wireless routers are designed to work with various products and services. The process will only take a couple of minutes and all you will need is a set of networking cables. The process is similar to connecting any home-level router to any ISP.

Remove the power cable from the rear of your Comcast cable modem.

Plug the Ethernet cable into the the «Internet» port on the modem.

Insert the other end of the cable into the «Internet» port on the rear of the Belkin wireless router. Plug the router’s power supply into a nearby wall outlet. Plug in the power cord for the Comcast modem.

Insert the Belkin Setup CD included with the router into your computer’s disc drive. Wait for the Setup Wizard to launch. Click «Setup» in the window that appears.

Type in the SSID and Password for the router into the fields provided. You can find this information on the Network Information Card attached to the side of the router. Click «Next» to set up the Belkin router with your Comcast Internet service. A «Success» message appears once the process is complete.

How to Reset a Belkin Router

Belkin brand routers are capable of a hardware reset if there are any problems with the current settings or if access to the router has been disabled inadvertently. The hardware reset function can be performed on Belkin routers by following these steps:

Note: Resetting a Belkin router will remove all of the current settings and return it to the factory default settings. Do not perform the reset unless you have the information needed to setup the router to the correct settings needed once the reset has been completed.

Manual Hardware Reset of the Belkin Router

To perform a hardware reset on a Belkin Router:

1) Find the reset button on the device. It is a red button that may be hidden on the rear or side of the router or it may be clearly marked with the word “reset.” The router should be on before continuing these steps.

Note: You may need to use a thin object such as a paperclip to press the button.

2) Press and hold the button for approximately 10 seconds then release the button to allow the router to reset. It may take up to a minute for the router to complete the reset cycle and return the router to the factory default settings.

3) From this point, re-enter the previous settings or try different settings as the ISP recommends for Internet connectivity.

Using the Belkin Router Setup Utility

The Belkin router setup utility is available in the majority of Belkin routers. To access this utility, a network capable device must be connected to the Belkin router via LAN or wireless access.

Once connected, a web browser on the device should have the address bar navigated to the IP address: 192.168.2.1 (http://192.168.2.1/)

This will open the Belkin Router Setup Utility home access page for the router. Located on this page’s left hand column is an option labeled “Restore Factory Default,” which can be selected. After the selection to restore the router to the factory default is selected, an administrator password prompt and a confirmation prompt will be displayed.

The default password should be left blank and if a password has been set, the current password must be used to perform a software based reset using the Belkin Router Setup Utility. After a brief restart period, the router should be accessible again with any and all settings reverted to the default factory settings.

From this point, the user can re-enter the previous settings or try different settings as their ISP recommends for Internet connectivity.

Hardware Restart of Belkin Router

A hardware restart is similar to a reset, but it retains the router’s current settings. To perform a hardware restart on a Belkin Router, the user should find the reset button on the device. It is a red button that may be hidden on the rear or side of the router or it may be clearly marked with the word “reset.” The router should remain on while performing the following steps:

Note: You may need to use a thin object such as a paperclip to press the button.

Press the button once for less than a second then release the button to allow the router to restart. It may take up to a minute for the router to complete the restart cycle. Once it has cycled, the router should be ready to connect to devices that are attempting to join the network activity.

Software Restart of Belkin Router

A device connected to the LAN or the router’s wireless access should access the Belkin router setup utility.

Once connected, a web browser on the device should have the address bar navigated to the IP address: 192.168.2.1 (http://192.168.2.1/)

This will open the Belkin Router Setup Utility home access page for the router. Located on this page’s left hand column is an option labeled “Restart Router,” which can be selected. After the selection to restart the router, an administrator password prompt and a confirmation prompt will be displayed.

The default password should be left blank and if a password has been set then the current password must be used to perform a software based restart using the Belkin Router Setup Utility. After a brief restart period, the router will have cycled, retaining the previous settings.

If the restart option for the Belkin Router does not solve the issue with the router, it may need to be reset and reconfigured to work correctly.

How to Setup a Belkin Router

To begin setting up your Belkin router, you will need:

  • PC or laptop.
  • Cable or DSL modem (one that has a functional Internet connection when plugged directly into your PC or laptop.)
  • Ethernet network cable(s).

Verify The Connection
To begin, connect your cable or DSL modem directly to your PC or laptop using an Ethernet cable.

If your modem is already connected, simply verify that the connection works.

Collect Your ISP Information
When trying to connect, if you see a login screen asking for information from your ISP, write down any information that has been saved,

You will have to perform this step if you have a static IP address. If there is no information saved, but your modem requires information to connect, call your ISP or consult their documentation and technical support.

Installing the Router
Unplug the Ethernet cable from the modem, and unplug the modem from the wall.

Run the Ethernet cable from your PC or laptop to the first LAN port on the Belkin router. Then run a second Ethernet cable from the modem to the WAN port on the Belkin router. (The WAN port may simply be labelled “modem”.)

Now plug in the cable or DSL line to the back of the modem, and plug the power cords in for both the modem and the router.

Finally, turn on your computer and verify that the connection works.

Configuring a Belkin Router
If you have a static IP address, or need to configure the Belkin router for another reason, you will need to perform the above steps and then log in to the router control panel before connecting to the Internet.

  • Bring up a browser, and type in the IP address 192.168.2.1
  • After the login screen comes up, the default username is admin, with no password.

If the default password is not working, look for a small hole on the back of your router. By inserting a pin into this hole and pressing the button inside, you can turn your router back to the default settings. (Here are further instructions for resetting your Belkin router.)

From this configuration panel, you can enter your ISP’s information, and you can also configure settings such as security protocols, automatic port forwarding, firewall protection, and other features.

Wireless Router Options
If you have a wireless router, you will either need a laptop with an integrated wireless card, or you’ll need to buy a USB adapter for your PC to connect to the router, rather than an Ethernet cable.

Follow the previous instructions with this slight adjustment.

If you have problems connecting, make sure that the computer with wireless receiver is close enough to the router, and verify that your USB adapter is installed correctly.

Also, you may need to try a direct connection with an Ethernet cable, which will allow you to access the router’s login page and customize the wireless security options.
